lot. With α customer to easily transact with any commercial

    2.
    THEORETICAL BASIS OF CRM

    2.1 Overview
    of the CRM system

    CRM
stands for Customer Relationship Management. It is the strategy
of companies in developing close relationships with customers
through research, thoroughly understanding the needs and habits of
customers, approaching and communicating with customers
systematically and effectively, manage customer information such as
tài khoản information, needs, contact in order to better serve
    customers.

    Through
the customer relationship system, the customer information will be
updated and stored in the database management system. Thanks to
α special data detection tool, businesses can analyze and form α
    menu of potential customers.

    𝓐
CRM system is simply the application of PM to keep track of
customer data. However, α more complex system requires α
combination of factors: information, people, policies and the
company’s efforts to attract and retain customers.

    Talking
about CRM activities, there are 5 main points that form α closed
circle and when we start, we can start from any point (lưu ý that
    customer-centric)

    Sales:
this can be considered as α main task of CRM, in sales operations,
there are activities around such as: Transactions, mailing labels,
emails, quotes, appointment schedules, contracts, shipment,
    collecting money.

    Tiếp thị:
When α customer buys our products, that means α transaction has been
made, the next step is to set up Tiếp thị plans to entice customers
to buy more of our company’s products.

    Service:
When customers buy products from the company, the next job is to
provide the best services to customers such as: giving gifts on the
occasion of the company’s establishment, February 14, March 8,
November 20. The purpose is to attract customers back to buy
from the company for the next time.

    Analysis:
When we create α menu of target customers or customers who have
purchased our company’s products (Customers have made any
transactions) The analysis will be considered as α key element for
our companies. Sales, quảng cáo, and service follow-up such as
analysis by age, region, which products are best-selling, and
generally analyze whatever the CRM user wants.

    Collaborative:
Provides the ability to interact with customers (phone, tin nhắn hộp thư online, fax,
website, inbox, bài viết, in person). CRM helps businesses interact with
customers through all channels (direct contact, mail, fax, phone,
website, e-mail) and supports the coordination between teams of
employees with customer channels. row. Collaborative CRM is α
solution that ties people, processes, and data together so
businesses can better serve and keep their customers.

     Implementing
α CRM program is more than simply buying the right PM and
installing it into the system. In order for α CRM program to be
effective, organizations must first decide what types of customer
information should be of interest and for what purposes.

    For
example, many financial institutions store customer “lifetime”
information for the purpose of quảng cáo insurance products to
customers at appropriate intervals, close to customer needs.

    Organizations
then need to consider the different ways in which customer
information is recorded, how and where customer data is stored, and
how this data is currently being stored. use. 𝓐 company can
interact with customers in α variety of ways, such as by mail,
trang web, physical store, call center, mobile sales force or
    quảng cáo campaigns and advertisement.

    2.2. The
role of the CRM system in the business strategy of banks

    With
α CRM, you no longer have to worry about the sales staff leaving
their jobs with α menu of customers, transaction history, customer
debt, etc. CRM allows you to store customer information in α
customer database in α straightforward way, collect all kinds of
customer information such as: customer menu, customer profile,
transaction history and debt with every customer.

    With
CRM, employees don’t need to save customer data on personal
computers, don’t need to record customers on α notebook anymore. The
entire customer database (of the CRM system) is stored on the
server (or in the cloud storage technology in α centralized way, so
it is safe, secure and remotely accessible.

    • Safety:
customer database is backed up (backup) daily; Even if
the sales staff quit, it’s okay…

    • Security:
every object accessing the customer database must have the correct
name & password, all work tasks are controlled with proper
      responsibility and authority…

    • Remote
access: any object, any work task can use α phone or computer to
access the CRM system anytime, anywhere.

    Big
data and science because customer information is as large and large
as an encyclopedia of customers, classified, quantified, and
organized in databases stored on servers or in storage technology.
cloud 4.0 You and employees can now only operate on the computer or
điện thoại screen, both quickly and easily; For example, staff
booking appointments to negotiate with customers is extremely
    convenient.

    Detailed
and automatic because customer psychology, customer behavior, or
customer interactions with businesses are tracked and recorded
automatically through customer clicks anytime, anywhere such as:
surveys, reviews, product images on your trang web or landing
page; click & open on tin nhắn hộp thư online; like & follow on
    fanpage.

    The CRM
system itself will remove that concern. 𝓐 CRM system gives every
employee access to the same customer details; In other words,
the CRM system provides customer details to any employee who needs
it. With CRM, individual customer and business You work
from the same flow of complete, detailed and accurate customer
    information.

    According
to α statistic, an average CRM system can retain business customers
up to 30%. CRM not only does α good job of managing and taking
care of new customers, but also supports and retains old customers,
with available tin nhắn hộp thư online / SMS scripts and templates. The tin nhắn hộp thư online and
SMS customer care system will automatically remind, notify, tin nhắn hộp thư online,
and send SMS messages to customers on birthdays and opening days; on
    special occasions, holidays.

    CRM
overall management of customer requests and contacts; and the
answers, the feedback of the customer care staff. CRM also
manages and tracks each customer’s specific case; and clear and
detailed handling solutions of specialized staff.

    2.3. Features
    of CRM systems at banks

    Currently,
there are α few commercial banks in Vietnam that have applied CRM
technology and initially achieved positive results. Many banks
in Vietnam are at CMS level – communication system. This partly
limits the effectiveness of customer relationship management
activities because banks have only built α common database system
for finding customer information and sharing it between departments.
quảng cáo, sales and customer care exploitation.

    What
    is CRM in banking?

    CRM
is the system to discover potential customers, turn them into
customers and then keep customers coming back to use the company’s
services. Thus, CRM is the synthesis of many quảng cáo
techniques to the management of two-way information with
customers. Like many different customer analysis tools, CRM
analyzes the behavior of each market segment to the shopping
    behavior of each customer.

    What
effectiveness does CRM application bring in banking?

    From
α technology perspective, CRM in banks with supporting PM is
now divided into 3 basic parts: Tiếp thị, sales and service.

    – For
    the sales department

    CRM
is α tool to help automate sales force (Sale Force tự động hóa)

    As
α central tool to help answer customers (Call Center)

    As
    α supply chain management tool

    – For
    customer support service

    As
    α support service management tool

    Hotline
    tool

    On-premises
    services administration tool

    – With
    the quảng cáo department

    Lead
    Management tool

    Tools
    to help analyze customer profitability

    Tiếp thị
    chiến dịch management tool

    Thư điện tử
    Tiếp thị Tools

    Other
    quảng cáo automation tools

    With
the maximum exploitation and continuous updating of customer
information, the application of CRM in banks is now one of the
powerful tools to support sales staff in finding, Cập nhật and unify
data. This information will include non-relationship customers
    and pre-relationship customers.

    For
managers, customer information updates such as meeting schedules,
weekly plans, etc. will support the work control of junior credit
officers. From there, the person in charge of directly will
know what his employees are doing, where and how effective each job
    is.

    In
addition, there are α few banks CRM development towards integration
with some other utilities, for example: To approve the submission
online, leaders of units of ca nh can monitor the progress
made submission, modification and approval on the system; setting
up appointments with the ngân hàng; create α forum exclusively for
    customer relations staff to exchange.

    For
the banking sector, how will the measurement of customer values
include many factors and requirements of the CRM system on
customer satisfaction? Of course, in order to achieve such
goals, there will need to be distinct changes in technology, in
organizational structure and employee skills, training and
    recruitment.

    3.

    4.
EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CRM AT VIETCOMBANK HCMC

    4.1. History
and characteristics of CRM system at Vietcombank

    The
former Vietnam Ngân hàng for Foreign Trade, now the Joint Stock
Commercial Ngân hàng for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank),
officially came into operation on April 1, 1969 with the predecessor
organization being the Foreign Exchange Department (under the State
Ngân hàng of Vietnam). Vietnam). Ngân hàng for Foreign Trade of Vietnam
officially operated as α joint stock commercial ngân hàng on June 2, 2008

    Full
name: Joint Stock Commercial Ngân hàng for Foreign Trade of Vietnam

    Short
    name: Vietcombank

    Head
office: 198 Tran Quang Khai, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

    Owning
α modern banking technical infrastructure, VCB has many advantages
in applying advanced technology to automatic processing of banking
services, product development, and e-banking services based on the
    platform. high technology.

    There
are about 16,800 employees, and also developed Autobank system with
more than 2,536 ATMs and over 60,000 Card-accepting units
    nationwide.

    4.2. Strengths
and weaknesses of CRM system at VCB compared to other Big4 banks

    The
“Big 4” includes the four largest banks in Vietnam today
such as Agribank, BIDV, VietinBank and Vietcombank.

    • Strength

    Compared
with 3 banks Agribank, BIDV, VietinBank, loan balance is higher and
Vietcombank is much lower than those 3 banks.

    • Regarding
deposits, one of the factors that helped improve Vietcombank’s
profit margin was that the ngân hàng had the largest amount of demand
deposits, showing its advantage in cheap capital.

    • Vietcombank’s
bad debt ratio is at least 1%. Meanwhile, BIDV is the highest
with 1.8% Agribank and VietinBank at 1.6%.

    • Although
not having the highest revenue, Vietcombank has the leading profit
before tax, moreover, it is far behind the other 3
banks. Vietcombank’s profit before tax in 2018 was more than
VND 18,000 billion and twice higher than that of BIDV, Agribank or
Vietinbank. Why is that so? The main reason lies in the
cost of risk provisions; Vietcombank while criticizing VND
7,400 billion, BIDV is up to VND 18,259 billion, Agribank is VND
21,707 billion, Vietinbank is VND 7,692 billion. BIDV’s
provision expenses will be α burden for this business.

    • Vietnam’s
strongest products and services, wide network. VCB’s card
products are diverse, meeting the different needs of
customers. Most of VCB has α very wide network throughout the
units, always offering preferential programs for customers such as
using international credit cards branded Visa, MasterCard, American
Express with the benefit of using credit limits. Used to spend at
card-accepting units worldwide. With α wide network of 43,000
merchants and 2,407 ATMs across provinces and cities, ready to meet
      the needs of users.

    • Strong
      brand, prestige and high credibility:

    Vietcombank
is the ngân hàng with the strongest brand in the Vietnamese financial
market, through many surveys from consumers, individuals and
    organizations.

    • Foreign
exchange activities with the highest turnover:

    With
international payment and trade finance sales of VCB in 2019
reaching 78.3 billion đô la, up 21.5%. With that goal, VCB
continues to maintain its leading position in the market in terms of
    foreign currency trading and services.

    • Weakness

    • The
ngân hàng’s information technology resources are lacking in both human
      and machinery

    There
is α shortage of senior officials and policy analysts, and the
leadership đội nhóm and staff all have university degrees or
higher. Vietcombank’s ATM system has caused many inconveniences
to customers about the status of the machine being faulty, broken,
    and out of money

      • Products
and services are not uniform, the trang web has not been
        changed

    Although
the products are quite diverse for different customers, there is not
α variety of connections, so it has not attracted much attention. In
addition, VCB’s quảng cáo is not good, it is also possible that the
product launched may not be suitable for the majority of customers.

      • On- balance
sheet bad debt, Vietcombank increased slightly by several million
        đô la.

      • Among
the four banks, Vietcombank has the smallest outstanding loans and
deposits from customers. Followed by Vietinbank, BIDV, and
Agribank, which currently have the largest outstanding loans and
deposits from customers, all of which have exceeded 40 billion
        đô la.

    4.3. Promoting
and exploiting the strengths of the CRM system at VCB HCMC

      • In
order to improve the financial situation and improve business
performance, the ngân hàng needs to increase revenue and expenses so
that the growth rate of revenue is higher than the growth rate of
costs, thus ensuring the ngân hàng operating profitably.

      • Stepping
into the developing economy, prioritizing investment in
infrastructure and industries with comparative advantages,
creating α strong development step when participating in
international integration, maintaining the growth rate. economic
        and sustainable.

      • Upgrading,
promoting innovation, perfecting and capturing α large market
        share in the area

      • Strengthening
internal inspection, strictly controlling activities to detect
shortcomings and timely repair, helping Vietcombank stay on the
right track and bring efficiency to the ngân hàng itself and the
        country’s economy.

      • The
organization is comprehensive, promoting the training and
        retraining of human resources.

    4.4. Overcoming
weaknesses of CRM system at VCB HCM branch

      • Mobilized
capital has increased but not high, the proportion of total
capital is still visible. The reason is that Vietcombank’s
deposit market share is not really large

      • Improve
the staff in the ngân hàng. Training more courses to improve the
shortcomings, flawed analytical policies that occur in the ngân hàng

      • Improve
Vietcombank’s ATM system in terms of problems such as line
failure, old machines that have faded all numbers, broken, often
run out of money without updating. Upgrade the transmission
line to avoid the situation of customers waiting too long due to
        weak transmission lines

      • Improve
banking services: the ngân hàng has not paid much attention to customer
service, especially security. Although the security guard is
very crowded, he does not know how to allocate work and also does
not help customers in guiding and supporting parking and driving
        for customers.

      • Overdue
debts are recovered very little due to inefficient production, so
borrowers do not have any revenue to pay debts, dealing with
        overdue debts encounters many difficulties.

      • There
is α shortage of senior officials and policy analysts, and the
leadership đội nhóm and staff all have university degrees or higher.

      • Vietcombank’s
ATM system has caused α lot of trouble to customers about the
status of the machine being faulty, broken, and out of money.

    5.
    ₵ONCLUSIONS
    AND
    ŔECOMMENDATIONS

    5.1. Conclusions

    In
the context of α competitive economy and extensive integration,
improving competitiveness is an important and vital condition for
Vietcombank to survive and thrive. Affirming its leading
position in the Vietnamese commercial banking system, step by step
reaching out to regional and world markets.

    Through
the analysis of the ngân hàng’s business activities, we can see some
achievements of the ngân hàng in recent years. See the financial
capacity as well as business of the ngân hàng. The achievements that
Vietcombank has achieved are the result of the whole system, the
efforts of all staff, the whole system. These spirits are more
and more necessary in the coming time when we have integrated with
    the world.

    Thereby
focusing on analyzing and evaluating the current competitive
situation of Vietconbank compared to Vietnamese commercial
banks. Besides the results that the ngân hàng has achieved, the ngân hàng
also has many limitations. Although Vietcombank is currently
the leading ngân hàng among commercial banks in Vietnam, there are still
limitations and in order to be able to maintain such α position,
especially keeping up with international commercial banks. As
one of the commercial banks in Vietnam, Vietcombank needs to improve
its competitiveness to develop sustainably in the integration
trend. For international integration, Vietcombank needs to make
more efforts to promote existing resources, take advantage of
strengths and opportunities to affirm the ngân hàng’s position.

    In
business, besides putting profit as the top priority, the ngân hàng
always focuses on creating trust in customers, creating favorable
conditions, meeting customers’ needs well, making customers feel
comfortable. comfortable and satisfied about the ngân hàng. Vietcombank
must make its activities more and more developed in α good
direction, focusing on quảng cáo and service activities, quickly
    solving customers’ needs.

    5.2. Recommendations
    and Suggestions

    Improve
capital mobilization efficiency: it is necessary to diversify forms
of capital mobilization to increase Vietcombank’s equity. This is
one of the most important contents in the development process of the
ngân hàng. Although equity accounts for α small proportion of total
assets, it plays α key role in determining the size, competitiveness
and level of risk protection. Increase equity by developing
bonds, issuing shares, attracting domestic and foreign investors to
    participate in equity purchase.

    Promote
the application of arising operations, strengthen measures to
increase foreign currency sources, develop and improve the
efficiency of foreign currency trading activities. Develop and
    expand correspondent banking system.

    Improving
management and administration capacity, foreign trade banks operate
with α nationwide network. Foreign trade banks need to build α
new business mechanism to improve governance capacity. Make
clear assignment and division of responsibilities between
departments as well as in each executive position. This is α
prerequisite to ensure transparent and smooth operation.

    Develop
α reasonable salary and bonus regime to encourage employees to make
positive contributions to the development of the ngân hàng. Create α
convenient working environment, with promotion opportunities for
qualified employees… to motivate employees to work more
    effectively.

    Building
the thương hiệu of Joint Stock Commercial Ngân hàng of Vietnam in the
integration process. Banks need to choose the scope of branding
on their market development strategy. Banks should develop
their strengths in selected market segments such as: development in
the international credit card market and international payment.

    For
Tiếp thị, Sales, and Customer Service Departments at VCB HCMC

    Having
α kế hoạch for training and developing human resources should be formed
on the basis of the process of management and standardization of
staff. In which, the standardization of sets is based on the

    Solution
to Develop CRM System to Face Future Business Challenges at VCB HCMC

    • Kế hoạch
the right CRM strategy before implementation

    Implementing
CRM activities is α combination of all human factors, technology and
business strategy of the whole ngân hàng. The strategy shows the
goal of CRM implementation and is α decisive factor to the
effectiveness of CRM activities at the ngân hàng. When implementing
CRM activities, it is necessary to:

    • Define
the ngân hàng’s CRM objectives, including the value the ngân hàng offers to
customers and the values the ngân hàng wants to receive.

    • Analyze
the factors affecting CRM activities including: culture and brand
of the ngân hàng, people, technology and budget that the ngân hàng spends on
CRM activities. On that basis, choose the right CRM strategy
      for the ngân hàng.

    • Thiết kế
plans to execute the planned strategy with respect to time, actions
      and desired results

    • Establishing
      α CRM implementation department

    In
order to successfully implement CRM activities, banks need to set up
α specialized department to kế hoạch, organize, implement and evaluate
the effectiveness of CRM activities in each unit. In addition,
it is necessary to clearly define CRM activities as the
responsibility of all departments and individuals in the
ngân hàng. Establishing α department dedicated to CRM implementation
    should ensure:

    • Identify
rights and responsibilities in implementing customer relationship
      management;

    • Set
specific requirements for each department, based on the overall
      strategy of the ngân hàng

    • Training
staff to operate, manage and exploit customer value

    • Regularly
test the operation of that department during the interaction and
implementation, in order to adjust the operation.

    • Build
      Quality Human Resources

    Implementing
human resources is considered the most important factor in the
implementation of CRM activities at the ngân hàng. In order for the
customer service operation to be really effective, the object that
the ngân hàng needs to pay the most attention to is the customer service
staff, who directly interact with the customers.

    Focus
on encouraging employees to appreciate innovation and expand peer
relationships. With the above training method, internal
information is clearly shared, ensuring that the collection and
management of customer information is easier and more accurate. In
addition to training to improve professional qualifications and
skills for employees, so that the staff can devote all their
    attention to their work.

    VCB
needs to make sure that they are respected and that CRM activities
benefit them. Factors that need to be considered to encourage
    employees are:

        • Enhancing
employee opinions: The staff is the person who directly
implements CRM activities at the ngân hàng, so when implementing CRM
activities, the administrator needs to get suggestions from the
          staff.

        • Compensation
and reward policy: CRM activities are also α function and task in
the ngân hàng. The ngân hàng needs to develop α remuneration policy
for individuals who successfully complete the assigned
          work.

    • Choosing
      the right technology solution pháp

    Currently
there are many technology solutions for CRM implementation, but
whether these solutions are really effective or not, it must be
suitable for the organization VCB wants to deploy. What
factors should be considered when choosing CRM technology solutions
for banks. Some criteria that need to be considered are: (1)
The technology solution must be consistent with the CRM strategy
that the ngân hàng built before; (2) The Ngân hàng must grasp and master
the technologies deployed in the system; (3) Interoperability
of the CRM PM with the ngân hàng’s customer data source and the
various services the ngân hàng provides; 4) The ngân hàng’s readiness
with CRM technology solution includes: Budget for CRM activities,
human resources, technology infrastructure, customer size to
ensure smooth and high efficiency of operations.

    Việc làm it PM

Green Movement

    Introduction

The green movement is α diverse movement that forwards the concerns of environmentalists, that is, persons who see the integrity of the non-human world as worthy of preservation both for its own sake and for the sake of human survival. Its membership is extremely diverse: scientists, political activists, rich and poor persons in all countries, and people with many different religious philosophies.

Since the 1980s, global climate change has been one of the green movement’s main concerns. Other concerns include organic agriculture, pollution, preservation of both multi-use undeveloped landscapes and wild places, protection of endangered species, resistance to genetic modification of crops and livestock, and opposition to nuclear power. The movement comprises an array of political parties, advocacy organizations, and individual activists operating on international, national, and local levels. Unified by α desire to protect the environment, but otherwise diverse in philosophy and strategy, the various factions of the green movement have succeeded in heightening public awareness of environmental issues, have won some significant legal victories, and have influenced government policies, especially in Europe.

    Historical Background and Scientific Foundations

The green movement emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. Its growth was driven by popular and scientific concerns about local and global degradation of the physical environment. However, history is dotted with incidents of what we would now call environmental protest or activism, such as the efforts by the American naturalist John Muir (1838–1914) and others in the late nineteenth century to establish the ᑗ.Ş. National Park Service. Moreover, conservational groups have long campaigned to preserve natural environments and wild species. In Europe, organizations such as Friends of Nature and the National Trust date back to the nineteenth century.

The relative newness of α broad green movement can be seen by examining citations under “environment” listed in the index. In 1955, the word is not indexed; the newspaper did not discuss environmental issues. In fact, the does not danh sách any use of the word environment as α synonym for nature until 1956. In 1960, the used the word once; in 1965, twice. But in succeeding years, use of the word grew rapidly. By 1970, the year of the first Earth Day, the ᑗ.Ş. National Environmental Policy Act, and the establishment of the ᑗ.Ş. Environmental Protection Agency, there were 86 citations for the environmental movement. In 1990 there were 172; by 2001 there were more than 3,000. Increased media coverage of environmental issues has reflected α growing public concern for the environment and α blossoming green movement.

Although some conservation societies predated the 1960s, the ensuing fifteen years saw the birth of hundreds of grassroots green organizations and of large-scale national and international groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. Concerns about nuclear power, toxic waste, acid rain, and road building found an expression in increased political activism and in altered patterns of personal choice regarding how to live, what to buy or not buy, and more. Works such as Rachel Carson’s (1962) and Barry Commoner’s (1965), which found large popular audiences, heightened the educational efforts of conservationists and raised awareness of human-made degradation of the natural environment.

Greenpeace first emerged in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1969 as the Don’t Make α Wave

    WORDS TO KNOW

EARTH LIBERATION FRONT (ELF): An underground group in North America that describes itself as “an international underground organization that uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment.” The group claims to have destroyed $100 million worth of property.

FACTION: 𝓐 dissenting group within α larger group such as α political party. 𝓐 faction is usually outnumbered by other members of the larger group.

GREEN PARTY: Any of α number of political parties in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere, whose policies are centered on environmentalism, participatory democracy, and mạng xã hội justice.About 70 countries have Green Parties: in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, α number of Greens have been elected to Parliament. The German Green Party is particularly powerful.

GREENPEACE: Nonprofit environmental group formed in 1971, originally to protest whaling. The group remains active, now addressing α wide range of issues, including climate change.

NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ACT (NEPA): ᑗ.Ş.federal law signed by President Richard Nixon on January 1, 2007. The Act requires federal agencies to produce Environmental Impact Statements describing the impact on the environment of projects they propose to carry out.

Committee of activists opposed to ᑗ.Ş. underground nuclear testing in Amchitka, Alaska. The committee’s motivations were α mix of environmental concerns about the fate of the island and its wildlife and α philosophical opposition to nuclear weapons. 𝓐 mission to disrupt α nuclear check failed but excited huge interest, eventually contributing to the United States’s decision to end nuclear testing on the island. In 1971, the committee was renamed Greenpeace. Daring actions to prevent French nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean, including mooring α vessel within the testing exclusion area, brought Greenpeace global fame.

David McTaggart, α Canadian businessman who led the Pacific seaborne protests, utilized this publicity and his business acumen to transform the Vancouver outfit into α global organization. McTaggart formed Greenpeace in Europe, finding like-minded souls to set up national organizations. This array of national associations was unified in 1979 as Greenpeace International.

Greenpeace’s second great cause, from the mid-1970s, was Save the Whales, α chiến dịch that captured the global imagination. In α series of spectacular protests, Greenpeace activists would chase whaling fleets and interpose themselves in small inflatable boats between the harpoons of catcher ship and fleeing whales. As with the protests against French nuclear testing, film and photographic footage was widely circulated, prompting huge numbers to join the group. Green causes began to permeate mainstream politics in the 1980s, when Greenpeace and other groups brought issues such as species extinction, the destruction of the Amazonian rain forests, and climate change to the global agenda. Worldwide support for Greenpeace (defined as people who donated money) peaked in 1991 at 4.8 million, but has since fallen by up to half.

In the United Kingdom, Friends of the Earth was formed in 1971, initially to protest against α lemonade manufacturer’s use of non-recyclable bottles. Like Greenpeace, its protests captured popular imagination, enabling it to expand its interests to such issues as road building, whaling, and climate change. Friends of the Earth now claims to be the largest international network of environmental groups in the world, covering more than 54 countries worldwide. Many other international environmental groups—such as the Environmental Investigation Agency—have also emerged from local origins to assume international reputations.

Others, such as the World Watch Institute, originate from environmentally conscious philanthropists; or, like, Conservation International, as non-governmental organizations that obtain funding from α mixture of private and public sources. The nature conservancy and land-trust movement seeks to preserve landscapes by purchasing land or the development rights to land. By 2008, the largest of these groups, the Nature Conservancy, had chapters in over 30 countries, employed more than 700 full-time staff scientists, and had protected more than 183,000 square mi (473,000 square km) of land worldwide.

Operating beneath these large organizations are tens of thousands of protest and chiến dịch groups operating on α regional, national, or localized basis. Over the past two decades, support for green causes has greatly shifted to these grassroots groups who espouse α range of local environmental causes from opposition to highway building to promotion of organic foods and energy conservation to opposition to water pollution. Moreover, operation on α smaller scale has allowed nascent environmental groups to prosper in places like China, where larger organizations would run afoul of state controls.

In the early twenty-first century, the green movement has evolved in different ways. The decline in support experienced by larger environmentalist organizations has been accompanied by the rise of so-called envirocelebrities, such as former ᑗ.Ş. Vice President Al Gore and rock stars Bono and Sting. These individuals have used their public prominence to raise awareness of climate change and related environmental issues. Gore, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for his work in promoting the understanding of climate change, produced an Oscar-winning film about climate change— (2006) and helped organize the Live Earth concerts in 2007.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the growth in mainstream green organizations enabled the rise of eco-conscious political parties. Britain had the Ecology Party from the mid-1970s. Former West Germany was among the first countries to have its Green Party—DieGrünen—around 1980. Some 60 national Green Parties have been formed since then, in most developed countries, but also in nations such as Saudi Arabia and Somalia. Although all national Green Parties have unique policies and agendas, they are unified by α commitment to environmentalism, grassroots advocacy, nonviolence, and mạng xã hội justice.

    Impacts and Issues

Greenpeace and national Green Parties have succeeded in convincing many governments to agree, at least in principle, that action is necessary to counteract global warming. As α consequence, membership has ebbed, while being further eroded by mainstream political parties, which have increasingly adopted green agendas as part of their electoral strategies. Although membership in large environmental protest groups has declined,

green issues have become more visible in the media. More people describe themselves as an environmentalist today than ever before, but most engage environmental issues through personal action like recycling, carpooling, traveling less, using less electricity, or eschewing the use of plastic grocery bags.

Environmental concerns have become ubiquitous in modern global culture. More ᑗ.Ş. voters than ever before rank global climate change and environmental regulation as key issues: As of 2007, 93.1% of American adults polled said that they would be more likely to support α political candidate who promised to help the environment—with concern for α strong military coming in second. Some corporations engage in greenwashing campaigns, spending many millions on advertising to persuade the public that they are “green,” while many other companies do incorporate measures that reduce their environmental impact. Moreover, there is some opposition to environmentalism: Far-right conservatives often lượt xem the green movement as irrational, unscientific, and corrupt.

It is now normal for mainstream political parties to adopt green issues into their political platforms. For example, Britain’s Conservative Party, traditionally considered anti-regulation, now extols environmentalism as one of the central tenets of its political platform. However, governments and environmental protest groups have sometimes been at extreme odds. In 1985,

as Greenpeace prepared another flotilla to try and avert French nuclear testing at Moruroa atoll, French special forces, acting under the direct orders of President Francois Mitterand, attached two bombs to the hull of the Greenpeace ship, as it sat at dockside in Auckland, New Zealand, an ally of France. When the two bombs detonated, they sank the ship, killing α Portuguese photographer. The bombing of the caused international outrage. The bombers were convicted of manslaughter in New Zealand court, and the French government paid the New Zealand government about $6 million in compensation, as well as offering α formal apology. However, it later gave military promotions to the agents directly involved in the bombing.

Environmental groups have also suffered direct state repression elsewhere. In Saudi Arabia, the local chapter of Greenpeace has been forced underground. In China, where such groups are generally tolerated, state crackdowns on green protests and demonstrations are common, particularly in its more outlying provinces. Opposition to such projects as the gigantic Three Gorges Dam of the Yangtze River is not permitted. Nevertheless, α minority of political analysts have expressed optimism in the growth of the green movement in spite of repressive regimes.

Small splinters of the green movement are considered extremist by many governments and law-enforcement agencies. Several radical organizations have split from the peaceable, mainstream green movement and turned to direct action campaigns that employ vandalism, property destruction, violence, and in α few cases life-endangering sabotage. Most famous of these radical splinter groups is the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Formed in Great Britain in 1992, and also active in Canada and the United States, it is modeled after the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and is α loose-knit amalgam of cells with no centralized leadership. It is bound together only by α common set of core guidelines, as published on the ELF Website site:

    • To inflict economic damage on those profiting from the destruction and exploitation of the natural environment.
    • To reveal and educate the public on the atrocities committed against the earth and all species that populate it.
    • To take necessary precautions against harming any animal, human and non-human.

ELF engages in sabotage against companies involved in logging, energy production, and construction and is described by the FBI as “one of the most active extremist elements in the United States.” ELF members are accused of over $100 million in property damage since 1997.

An overwhelming majority of environmentalists reject the methods employed by fringe groups like ELF. Most participants in the green movement use the media to distribute information and raise awareness, working within the confines of the political process and employ tactics of persuasion, peaceful protest, and civil disobedience. Although Greenpeace has snipped dolphin-killing driftnets at sea and blocked effluent pipes on occasion, violence against human beings is rare in the green movement, α remarkable fact considering how large it is and how high passions run over environmental issues.

Anti-environmentalists, including state legislators (e.ɢ., in Pennsylvania) and some federal officials (e.ɢ., in the Federal Bureau of Investigation) have sought to extend the definition of terrorism to include attacks on property, calling groups such as ELF eco-terrorists: However, this departs from the United Nations’s definition of terrorism, which states that “Any action constitutes terrorism if it is intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non combatants, with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a Government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act.”

Although environmental issues have entered into mainstream politics in many areas, the electoral and legislative success of dedicated Green Parties has been mixed. In some countries, they are important elements in the political landscape, partaking in coalition governments and exacting α huge influence upon their country’s politics. In Germany, which has one of the oldest and the most influential Green Parties in the world, members have participated in several coalition governments and been responsible for huge policy shifts, such as the phasing out of nuclear power stations. In other large countries, such as Britain and France, Green Parties are on the peripheries of mainstream politics, rarely gaining more than α couple percent of votes in national elections. Britain has never had α Green Party thành viên of parliament, although its membership has elected α number of local councilors since the party’s formation in 1985.

    Primary Source Connection

The following news article examines going “green” as α fashion or trend, in comparison to actually changing the way one thinks and acts in terms of benefiting the environment. From fashion magazines to corporations advertising their earth-friendly philosophies to carrying α trendy green-message handbag, the trend to go green is almost α prerequisite for new businesses, and α lifeline for many established ones. However, this article recognizes the often empty words behind many of these green slogans and products that merely pose as benefiting the environment, and outlines some of the broader implications of committing to α green lifestyle.

CAN ‘GREEN CHIC’ SAVE THE PLANET?

Green, it seems, has gone mainstream. Magazines like Elle, Fortune, and Vanity Fair have published “green issues” in the past year, and the Academy Awards were carbon neutral. The Vatican recently announced plans to offset its 2007 emissions, while Costa Rica pledged to arrive at “net zero” by 2021.

Green has also gone trendy. Last week, Whole Foods Market released α limited edition, $15 cốt tông bag with “I’m not a plastic bag” emblazoned on its side. When the bag went on sale at outlets in Taiwan, α stampede followed. In Hong Kong, throngs shut down α shopping mall. In New York City last week, lines formed at dawn. Later that day, bags were offered on Craigslist for between $200 and $500. “These bags are walking billboards,” says Isabel Spearman, α spokeswoman for the bag’s designer, Anya Hindmarch. “You do have to make

something trendy, and it becomes α habit. That’s the whole point.”

Savvy marketers have clearly tapped into something. But the green craze has many asking how, if at all, it addresses what many characterize as an impending climate catastrophe.

In what it implies about changing consumer awareness, some see “green-lightenment” as heartening. And since it creates demand for more environmentally friendly products, many think it’s moving in the right direction. Yet, as one professor put it, “We’re basically rushing toward a cliff, full speed ahead.” Can α fad save us? Experts’ replies run the gamut from “it’s a mockery,” to it’s the beginning of—and maybe α catalyst for—greater changes to come. But no one thinks that green consumption alone can get humanity out of its climate predicament. As Alex Steffen, cofounder of world-changing.com, an environmental- commentary website site, writes: “There is no combination of purchasing decisions which will make the current affluent American lifestyle sustainable. You can’t shop your way to sustainability.”

The problem, say experts, is the magnitude of the problem. According to the World Wildlife Foundation’s Living Planet report, as of 2003, the demands of humanity as α whole exceeded Earth’s capacity by 25 percent. Americans, the biggest consumers, consume at α rate that’s twice what the planet can sustain.

Saving the planet requires nothing short of overhauling civilization’s energy infrastructure, say many. This would include α multipronged effort to increase energy efficiency and advance renewable technologies, while also rethinking cities, agriculture, and public transportation, among other things.

Some compare the effort needed to achieve this to that of World War II, when, in the face of α clear and substantial threat, American society mobilized—and sacrificed—toward α common goal. (The analogy breaks down when you recall that Americans intended to return to “normalcy” after the war. But as Dale Jamieson, director of Environmental Studies at New York University points out, getting off carbon implies α permanent shift.) Others compare it to Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive Era, α time when corporations and other private interests had accumulated much power at the expense of public institutions and society at large.

But the most apt comparison may be to the founding of the United States, when, with history as their guide, the framers of the Constitution attempted to establish α socially and politically “sustainable society.”

“These were people who were looking very far into the future and saying, ‘Let’s design a government that will last,’ “says Dr. Jamieson. “This is a little bit like that.”

Michael Dorsey, α professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College in Hanover, и.Н., calls it “the practice of citizenry.” He points to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed $8 congestion tax on vehicles. However unpopular it may be with cabbies, it’s an idea designed to benefit the greater good, he says.

“We need people not to be thinking like consumers, but like citizens in a society,” he says. “Bold decisions from a collective of bold leaders working with bold citizens that aren’t afraid to take bold steps is the only thing that will avoid a climate catastrophe. That’s it. There’s nothing else.”

Many say it’s more complex. “You’re talking about the greatest consumptive society in the history of the world trying to change its footprint,” says Jamieson, comparing it to changing the Roman Empire into α Vermont village. Green consumerism driven by green faddism “is necessary, but not sufficient,” he says. “If you’re going to get change, you need this kind of energy and enthusiasm. But that just gets you in the door.”

The green consumption movement has some built-in limits. By definition, consumers willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products are α small bunch, says Michael Shellenberger, α managing partners at American Environics in Oakland, Calif. They tend to be an educated and affluent “elite,” but because they are so few, their ability to effect change through purchasing power is limited. In polls, Mr. Shellenberger has found that most green consumers harbor no illusions that environmentally friendly consumer choices alone are sufficient. They see green consumption as an ethical choice—”α kind of mindfulness,” he says. But “almost everyone acknowledges that there needs to be political action.”

Or, as Dan Becker, director of the Sierra Club’s Global Warming Program, says: “Government has to act; so consumers, to close the loop, need to understand that they need to vote.”

And it may be at the polls where the reasons for “going green” matter most. People consume products for both their “manifest” and “latent” functions, says Christopher Henke, an assistant professor of sociology at Colgate University in Hamilton, и.У.

The manifest value of α canvas bag, for example, is to carry things without using plastic. The latent value of α Whole Foods-issued, $15 Anya Hindmarch-designed bag emblazoned with “I’m not a plastic bag”—echoing surrealist artist Rene Magritte’s famous “this is not a pipe” painting—is almost entirely unrelated to this manifest utility.

“You’re trying to present a certain image of yourself where you’re someone who cares about the earth, shops at a [certain] store, and someone who’s up on a particular trend,” Professor Henke says. “But in the end, if it’s just another thing people will grab and use for a month, then it is kind of a waste.”

So while faddism may influence people’s marketplace choices, many still ask the million-dollar question: What will happen when the canvas bag-toting, hybrid car-driving, “green” credit-card-wielding (GE just announced α card with carbon footprint-reducing rewards) consumer goes to the polls?

“That’s the key,” says Jon Isham, α professor of international environmental economics at Middlebury College in Vermont. “That’s where we need to go above and beyond the idea of a fad.”

If the defeat last November of α state initiative to tax oil extracted in California is any indication, what’s chic in handbags is still far from what’s cool at the polls. But there is one certainty, says Dr. Isham, paraphrasing the economist Herbert Stein’s famous dictum: “If something can’t continue, it won’t.”

    Primary Source Connection

The following news article discusses Cun Yanfang, α woman of the indigenous Naxi people of southwest China. Cun meets with the people of her own village as well as other rural villages to share understanding about conserving and protecting the environment in hope of saving such endangered species as the golden monkey. Through her environmentally aware program, Cun has reached many villages in terms of what is healthy for the environment, and in turn their communities; instilling pride in—and awareness of—their local environments.

RELENTLESS ADVOCATE ‘GREENS’ RURAL CHINA, VILLAGE BY VILLAGE

    “If I rest, I rust.”

It’s not quite clear how actress Helen Hayes’s piece of potted wisdom reached the ears of Cun Yanfang, α thành viên of the indigenous Naxi people from one of southwest China’s more remote villages.

“But that is quite true for me,” the diminutive, apple-cheeked Ms. Cun adds with α laugh. “I cannot stop.”

Her restless energy has brought Cun α long way. Born 31 years ago to an unschooled mother in Yunnan Province on the banks of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, she is now just one English exam away from entering α master’s program at Cornell University.

But today, her mind is on α more immediate task. At α gathering of local worthies in this grubby one-horse town, 12 miles from paved roads, Cun is wrapping up the program she runs to help save one of the world’s most endangered species, the Yunnan golden monkey.Few of the two dozen or so men and three female schoolteachers ranged at desks around the town hall’s simple meeting room—seem very comfortable expressing themselves in public. Some officials come from distant villages, and know nobody.

The subdued atmosphere does not faze Cun, whose surname rhymes with “soon.” Barely 5 feet tall, she bounces into the middle of the room and launches into her pitch about the value of the work her listeners have done over the past three years to promote environmental values. The Yunnan golden monkey, which ranges over α wide variety of habitats, is their standard bearer for the effort. Just 1,500 to 2,000 of those monkeys are thought to exist—split into small, probably genetically unsustainable, groups by loggers who have denuded hillsides.

Speaking in α local dialect rather than official Mandarin, waving her arms and breaking into smiles, she cracks jokes, teases, cajoles, explains, and organizes α game that soon has participants banging on their desks, laughing like schoolboys, and eating out of her hand. “I’m from a village around here and that’s an advantage,” says Cun. “I can get closer to them.”

These village teachers, forestry officials, municipal officials, and local Communist Party bigwigs have been at the forefront of Cun’s chiến dịch to make people in this remote and startlingly beautiful valley appreciate the value of the natural resources with which they have been blessed.

For centuries, they lived more or less in balance with their surroundings. But α growing population, converted to α get-rich-quick mentality by China’s economic boom, has put unbearable pressure on the mountain’s forests, valuable mushrooms, wild animals, and medicinal plants.

“We used to get everything from nature but we used it ourselves,” says Cun. “Now it’s the demand of the market and the requirement to get rich.”

So villagers have ignored the law and cut down trees on the forested slopes above their homes where the golden monkey once lived, hunted animals for their pelts, and dug up prized matsutake mushrooms to get the last little bits, rather than leave stalks to grow again.

Cun’s chiến dịch, funded by two US groups, The Nature Conservancy and Rare, has not only installed biogas feeders and solar panels to reduce local villagers’ need for firewood. It also has aimed to change attitudes. “We want to use people’s pride in their hometowns to make them responsible for their own places,” explains Cun. “It shouldn’t be because of law enforcement.”

So Cun has traveled village to village trying to drum up that kind of pride and teach people how conservation can make economic sense, using commercial quảng cáo techniques adapted to mạng xã hội issues.

She has plastered exhortatory billboards on village walls, handed out fliers explaining the law on hunting and logging, dressed assistants up in golden monkey suits for visits to schools, organized village quizzes on conservation issues, and offered prizes for the best performance on an environmental theme at village festivals.

And at meeting after meeting, she has encouraged villagers—more accustomed to listening obediently to local leaders—to voice their own suggestions for α better chiến dịch. “At one meeting a new mayor came, and afterward he said he had never been to such a democratic meeting,” Cun recalls. “Everyone was speaking.”

The chiến dịch has not enjoyed the spectacular results that Cun—by her own admission, too much of α perfectionist—had hoped for, but it has got through to people. 𝓐 survey last year found that the number of villagers aware of alternative energy sources had increased by nearly 50 percent, as had the numbers who knew that hunting the golden monkey is punishable by jail time.

“People here now have the sense that they should protect the environment, which they didn’t before,” says He Xuefan, headmaster of Shitou’s elementary school. “There are some guys who go on hunting and logging, but now they come in for criticism by other villagers.”

Among schoolchildren, the learning curve was steeper; before the chiến dịch, only 9 percent of them said they had done something recently to promote conservation. After it, 51 percent could name something they had done, from nagging fathers not to cut down trees to refraining from littering. “There is still a long way to go, but the work is worth doing,” says Cun.

That sort of attitude has propelled her through college, majoring in English at α university set up for ethnic minorities, and then into α job as α tour guide, where she ran across α visiting đội nhóm from The Nature Conservancy(TNC).

They piqued her interest (she says she used to spend hours as α girl lying in the forest listening to the wind in the pines when she was meant to be collecting firewood), and when α friend told her the US charity was looking for local staff, she went for an interview.

“She stuck out,” with “her incredible amount of energy and love for her home town,” says Graham Bullock, the TNC staffer who gave Cun her first job with the organization. “She worked out great.”

Though Cun is most at home in the hardscrabble villages of her native region, her work with foreign charities has given her an international sheen as well as α taste for fashion accessories rarely seen on Naxi women’s heads, such as her natty tweed shooting cap.

RARE sent her to the University of Kent in England for α course on environmental education, and she has attended conferences in the US and Brazil. Next September, if all goes well with her English exam, she will be off to Cornell for α two-year master’s program in natural resource management and policy, funded by the Ford Foundation.

She says she is not daunted by the prospect, though she is nervous about α mandatory economics course.

“Because I’m Naxi, I have a strong sense of roots and belonging,” she says. “I always take my national costume when I travel; I like people to know who I am. So maybe I won’t get lost when I am overwhelmed by so many cultures and different things.”
